"We Will Mend the Broken Conscience with Art": Yaşar Seyman Explained the Power of Conscience and Art

In the Culture and Art Conversations event held at the Vicdan Foundation center on September 21, 2024, valuable researcher and writer Yaşar Seyman was with us under the moderation of our Foundation's Board of Directors Chairman Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu. This event was held to explore the effect of art on conscience and to take a step towards the improvement of society. You can watch the entire conversation here.

At the beginning of the event, our Foundation Board Chairman Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu spoke about the Vicdan Foundation's mission to bring people together regardless of their identities and to highlight the sense of conscience. Gergerlioğlu emphasized that the foundation aims to unite people on the basis of conscience, regardless of their religious, sectarian, ethnic or political identities. He stated that art in particular is an important tool for making conscience felt more in society and increasing awareness.

In his speech, Yaşar Seyman touched on social and political developments in Turkey, and explained how the concept of conscience has changed from the past to the present, and the effects of this change on society. Speaking about the power of art, Seyman stated that artists are the conscience of society and that they undertake the role of increasing social awareness by leaving lasting works.

Seyman, who argued that art should be spread to all layers of society and that it is not a luxury but a basic human need, underlined the power of art to bring society together and heal. During his speech, he explained with examples the effects of many branches of art, from literature to music, from painting to theater, on social consciousness.

This meaningful meeting provided an important platform to discuss how art and conscience are intertwined, the role of artists as the conscience of society, and how this role contributes to social healing. Throughout the event, participants had the opportunity to explore the deep connections between art and conscience by engaging in interactive conversations.

Such events serve the Vicdan Foundation's purpose of bringing together people from all walks of life to create a social consciousness that prioritizes conscience and human rights. This conversation on the relationship between art and conscience once again revealed how important art is for a society to become more just, more sensitive, and more conscientious.

As Vicdan Foundation, we aim to bring this transformative power of art to wider audiences and contribute to social healing. In this direction, we plan to host many more meaningful meetings in the future with the work of our culture and arts commission.
