Exemplary Behavior of the Week: Another Call to Conscience from Javier Bardem

The San Sebastián International Film Festival stands out as one of the most prestigious events in the world of cinema every year. This year, the festival, held in the pearl of the Basque region, Donostia-San Sebastián, between September 20-28, has become a meeting point for cinema lovers. Dating back to 1953, this long-established festival brings together films and artists that have made an impact internationally every year.

The festival atmosphere was as always magical. The city’s iconic Kursaal Congress Center was once again the heart of cinema. The event, where prestigious awards such as the Gold and Silver Oyster were handed out, left the memories of film enthusiasts as artists and film crews walked the red carpet.

But this year, one of the most talked about moments of the festival was the courageous speech made by the famous Spanish actor Javier Bardem. Bardem took the stage at the awards ceremony and spoke not only about his success in cinema, but also about how he uses his conscience in the face of humanitarian crises and injustices around the world. Referring to the tragedies in Gaza, Bardem said that this situation is "completely unacceptable, horrific and inhumane."

In his speech, he emphasized that acts of violence committed by the parties to the conflict cannot justify the great suffering inflicted on innocent people. Bardem stated that the international community must act more responsibly in the face of such humanitarian crises and that criticism should focus on human rights and universal values. He also emphasized that such criticism should not be confused with hate speech.

Javier Bardem's words left a deep impression on all participants: "We are a society, a world, and we are first, second or third degree victims of these events. Each of us has a responsibility, and this responsibility begins with not remaining silent."

The San Sebastián International Film Festival once again showcased the magical world of cinema this year. However, Javier Bardem’s conscientious call ensured that the festival went beyond being just an art event and became an area where social responsibility and sensitivity to human rights took the stage.
